Price it right and everything sells. Price it wrong and you're hauling it all back inside. Here's how to find that sweet spot for every item on your table.

๐Ÿ’ฐ The Golden Rule of Pricing

Price to Sell, Not to Profit

  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
10โ€“30% of Retail: That's the garage sale sweet spot. You paid $100? Price it at $10โ€“$30. Buyers expect deep discounts โ€” that's why they're here.
  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Round Numbers Only: Skip $4.75. Price things at $1, $2, $5, $10, $20. Nobody wants to make change for quarters at 8 AM on a Saturday.
  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
Tag Everything: Every single item needs a visible price. Unpriced items feel expensive and buyers will walk past them instead of asking.
  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Be Honest With Yourself: What you paid or what it means to you doesn't matter. The only question is: what will someone hand you cash for right now?
๐Ÿท๏ธ Pricing by Category

๐Ÿ‘• Clothing โ€” $1 to $5

  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
Everyday Clothes: $1โ€“$2 per item. T-shirts, jeans, blouses โ€” price them to move. Nobody pays more than $2 for a used shirt at a yard sale.
  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Brand Names: $3โ€“$5 for recognizable brands in great condition. Think North Face jackets, Levi's, Nike โ€” buyers will spot them.
  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
Pro Tip: Group items by size and use a "Fill a bag for $5" deal to clear out the last hour's inventory.

๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ Furniture โ€” 20โ€“30% of Retail

  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Condition is King: A solid wood dresser in good shape? 30% of retail. A scratched-up particle board shelf? $5โ€“$10 max, or give it away.
  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
Price Range: Small tables $5โ€“$15. Bookshelves $10โ€“$25. Couches $30โ€“$75. Anything over $100 will sit there all day.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Electronics โ€” 10โ€“25% of Retail

  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Must Work: Test everything before you price it. Non-working electronics are worth $0 at a garage sale. Label "works perfectly" if it does.
  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
Include Cables: A device with its charger and cables sells faster and can be priced higher. Missing the cord? Drop the price by half.

๐Ÿ“š Books โ€” $0.50 to $2

  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
Paperbacks: $0.50โ€“$1 each. Hardcovers $1โ€“$2. Don't overthink it โ€” volume is your friend here.
  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Bundle Deals: "5 books for $2" will clear your shelf faster than pricing each one individually. Buyers love feeling like they got a deal.

๐Ÿณ Kitchen & Housewares โ€” $0.50 to $5

  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Small Items: Mugs, plates, utensils โ€” $0.50โ€“$1 each. Group similar items together in lots. "Set of 4 mugs โ€” $2."
  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
Small Appliances: Toasters, blenders, coffee makers โ€” $3โ€“$5 if they work. Plug them in and demonstrate if you can.

๐Ÿงธ Toys & Games โ€” $1 to $5

  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
Complete Sets Win: A board game with all pieces? $3โ€“$5. Missing pieces? $1 or toss it. Buyers always check the box.
  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Action Figures & Dolls: $1โ€“$2 each. LEGO sets with instructions can fetch $5โ€“$10 if complete. Hot Wheels? 25 cents each or 10 for $2.

๐Ÿ”ง Tools โ€” 25โ€“40% of Retail

  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Tools Hold Value: Quality hand tools and power tools are the best sellers at any garage sale. A $80 drill in good shape? $25โ€“$30 is fair.
  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
Hand Tools: Screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers โ€” $1โ€“$5 each. Bundle a toolbox lot for $10โ€“$20 and watch it disappear.

๐Ÿ‘ถ Baby & Kids โ€” 15โ€“25% of Retail

  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
Strollers & Gear: $15โ€“$40 for strollers, high chairs, playpens. Parents are always looking and will pay fair prices for clean, safe gear.
  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Kids' Clothes: $0.50โ€“$1 per item. Kids outgrow everything fast, so there's huge supply. Bundle by size: "Bag of 12-month clothes โ€” $5."

Tricks That Move More Stuff

  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Bundle Deals: "3 for $5" or "Fill a bag for $10" creates urgency and makes buyers feel smart. They'll buy more than they planned.
  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
"Make an Offer" Strategy: Put this on big-ticket items you're unsure about. It invites conversation and you'll learn what people will actually pay.
  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Time-Based Discounts: "Everything half price after 2 PM" creates two waves of buyers โ€” early birds who pay full price and bargain hunters who come later to clean you out.
  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
The $1 Table: A table of everything-for-a-dollar draws people in. Once they're at your sale picking through the dollar bin, they notice the bigger items too.
๐Ÿ“ Canadian Market Tips

What Sells Well in Canada

  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Hot Sellers: Tools, outdoor gear, hockey equipment, winter clothing, and kids' items fly off tables at Canadian yard sales. Price these fairly and they'll go fast.
  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
Seasonal Advantage: Sell winter gear at spring sales (buyers stock up cheap) and summer gear at fall sales. Timing doubles your chances.
  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ
What Doesn't Move: Old textbooks, VHS tapes, bulky CRT TVs, and encyclopedias. Don't waste table space โ€” donate those instead.
  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ
University Town Edge: If you live near a campus, September move-in and April move-out weekends are prime sale windows โ€” students are both buyers and sellers.
